Young adults today are achieving major life milestones such as marriage and parenthood later in life compared to previous generations. Despite this trend, a significant portion of Americans aged 18 to 34 who have never been married express their desire to marry in the future.

Additionally, approximately half of young adults within this age group without children indicate their interest in becoming parents at some point.

Rates of Marriage and Parenthood Aspirations

Among individuals aged 18 to 34 who have never been married, 69% express their desire to eventually tie the knot, with 23% uncertain and 8% stating they have no interest in marriage. Interestingly, similar proportions of men and women show a desire to get married.

In terms of parenthood aspirations, 51% of childless young adults express a desire to have children in the future, while 30% are uncertain and 18% do not wish to become parents. Notably, a higher percentage of young men (57%) express their interest in having children compared to young women (45%).

Perceived Parental Pressure

The majority of young adults claim they do not feel pressured by their parents to get married. Among those who have never been married, 73% state they experience minimal or no pressure from their parents in this regard.

Likewise, 67% of childless young adults report feeling little to no pressure from their parents to have children. Gender does not seem to influence the perceived pressure exerted by parents in relation to marriage or parenthood.

Importance of Marriage and Parenthood

A 2023 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center highlighted that American adults of all ages prioritize aspects such as job satisfaction and strong friendships over marriage and parenthood when it comes to leading a fulfilling life. While 20% of adults aged 18 to 34 consider being married crucial for a fulfilling life, 22% believe having children is paramount.

In contrast, a significantly larger percentage (68%) value having a fulfilling job or career, and 62% prioritize having close friendships. Gender does not impact the importance young adults place on marriage or parenthood for a fulfilling life.
