In recent years, an increasing number of people, especially urban youth, have made purified water their primary source of drinking water.
However, a claim circulating online suggests that regularly drinking purified water could lead to calcium deficiency. But is this really true?
In China, drinking water generally falls into several categories: tap water, purified water, artificially mineralized water, natural mineral water, natural spring water, natural drinking water, and other types. Purified water is typically derived from tap water, processed to filter out harmful substances. However, during this filtration process, essential minerals like potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and zinc are also removed.
Huang Xiaoling, a clinical nutritionist at Nanning Second People's Hospital, explains, "The main purpose of drinking water, including purified water, is hydration. It does not cause calcium loss."
Doctors emphasize that calcium deficiency in the body is influenced by a variety of factors, including calcium intake, age, hormone levels, physiological or pathological conditions, and vitamin D status. While purified water lacks certain mineral elements, it does not directly lead to calcium depletion.
To maintain sufficient calcium levels, the key is a balanced diet. Foods such as dairy products, peanuts, black sesame seeds, seaweed, black fungus, and bok choy are rich in calcium and have high absorption rates. Therefore, dietary intake is far more effective for calcium supplementation than relying on drinking water.
Additionally, certain factors that interfere with calcium absorption should be avoided. These include oxalic acid, phytic acid, coffee, and carbonated beverages. For children and adolescents, excessive consumption of sugary drinks like milk tea can also hinder calcium absorption and lead to calcium loss. Reducing the intake of such drinks is highly recommended.
Long-term consumption of purified water does not directly result in calcium deficiency. To ensure overall health, a balanced diet rich in calcium-containing foods is essential. Pay attention to consuming foods with high calcium content and avoid factors that negatively impact calcium absorption or contribute to its loss. Maintaining a good nutritional balance is the foundation for strong calcium health.
