The Maroon Bells are often called the most photographed spot in Colorado, but no photograph can truly capture the grandeur of these towering peaks.

Discover how to visit this iconic landmark and experience firsthand what makes it a symbol of the state’s stunning natural beauty!

The Stunning Landscape

If the views of this pristine valley seem familiar, it's because the Maroon Bells are the most photographed mountains in America and for good reason. Nestled just 10 miles west of Aspen and 16 miles from Snow-mass in a stunning glacial valley, the Maroon Bells, two 14,000-foot peaks—embody the breathtaking beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

Their bell-shaped summits rise above a serene reflective lake, creating a picture-perfect scene year-round that draws visitors from all over the world.

The Maroon Valley itself has been shaped over more than 300 million years of geologic activity, including sedimentation, uplift, and erosion from wind, water, and ice. According to the U.S. Forest Service, the iconic maroon color of the peaks comes from the weathering of hematite, an iron-rich mineral. Maroon Lake, meanwhile, sits in a basin carved by Ice Age glaciers.

Hiking Adventures

One of the highlights of our visit was hiking the Maroon Bells Trail, which is approximately 3.5 miles round trip. The trail takes you through lush forests and offers various viewpoints along the way. As we hiked, we encountered wildflowers in full bloom, adding vibrant colors to the landscape. The trail is moderate in difficulty, making it suitable for most hikers.

The Maroon Bells are typically accessible from late May to mid-October, depending on weather conditions. During peak season, the area can get quite busy, so arriving early in the day is advisable to secure parking. Shuttle tickets are around $10 per person and run from 8 AM to 5 PM.
