The lions are one of the most famous and the most talked about big cats. However, there are still many misunderstandings about lions. How much do you know about lions? Check out the following facts and see if they can amaze you.
1. Not all male lions have manes.
In our impression, the female lions are relatively small and have no mane, while the male lions are larger and have a thick mane on the head. However, the Chavo lions living in Kenya and Tanzania are the only species that male has no manes.
2. Lions exist not only in Africa, but also in Asia.
There are now more than 300 Asian lions living in the Gir Forest National Park in India. These more than 300 Asian lions are all descendants of 13 lions. In 1907, only 13 Asian lions survive from the guns of hunters. Later, people captured all 13 lions and raised them in captivity and released them to Gil Forest National Park.
3. Only Kruger Lions can produce White Lions.
The white lion is a kind of snow-white lion. Similar to the white tiger, which is a white variant of the Bengal tiger, all white lions are a white variant of the Kruger lion. In addition, white lions and white tigers can give birth to a really rare kind of white ligers.
4. In Africa, more than a quarter of lion cubs are killed by their "stepdads".
Lions live in packs where the male leader changes every once in a while. When the new leader drives away the original leader through battle, the new leader will take over all the lionesses, and at the same time, he will kill the offspring left by the former leader, and then give birth to his own children with the lioness. Zoologists believe that male lions do this to facilitate genetic exchange between lions and produce healthier offspring.
5. Lions are not egalitarian in distributing their prey.
Members of a lion pride tend to rest and hunt together, appearing to be harmonious, but they are not evenly distributed after catching prey. Once some members of the pride have caught prey, other members of the lion rush to scramble for it. In the competition, the male lead often dominates the prey. After the male lion has eaten, it is the female lion's turn, and finally the cub. If the prey is small, many members of the pride will remain hungry; only if the prey is large enough, each member of the pride can be fed.
6. The lion is the big cat that attracts the most flies.
Due to the hot climate in Africa, there are so many flies, and a lion that has just eaten can always attract a lot of flies. These flies are nasty, but the lions can't be bothered to keep them away.
7. Lions love to snatch hyenas for food.
In Africa, hyenas and lions are bitter rivals, they often fight each other over their prey. In the news, we can see images of hyena herds besieging lions for their prey. But in reality, lions snatch hyenas even more than hyenas snatch lions.
